Common API and compliance speeds time to market for embedded hardware developers

VANCOUVER, British Columbia and LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- BroadMotion today announced that its JPEG2000 and Motion JPEG2000 codecs have been optimized on the Texas Instruments (TI) TMS320C64x(TM) and TMS320DM64x(TM) digital signal processors and are shipping today. TI has also certified that BroadMotion's JPEG2000 software codecs are compliant with TI's eXpressDSP(TM) algorithm interface standard, a set of rules and guidelines with a published Application Programming Interface (API) designed to enable interoperability of real-time DSP algorithms. Such compliance ensures that embedded hardware developers can rapidly prototype their software and significantly decrease their time to market.

"We are excited about BroadMotion's C64x JPEG2000 codec offering and availability, as it provides many of our worldwide imaging, security, digital cinema and military surveillance customers with a programmable DSP solution," said Danny Petkevich, TMS320C6000(TM) Platform marketing manager, TI. "For customers developing JPEG2000 applications that require additional software algorithms, the C64x DSP and eXpressDSP compliancy gives customers the flexibility to easily develop their own code or add off-the-shelf optimized algorithms from TI's extensive network of DSP third parties, which is not possible with a fixed-function product."

"Through eXpressDSP software compliance and JPEG2000 code optimization on our DM64x/C64x DSPs, BroadMotion is able to provide customers improved time to market advantages complimented with very efficient code required for demanding JPEG2000 and Motion JPEG2000 imaging and video applications. In addition, BroadMotion enables customers to take advantage of the JPEG2000 technology features that other codecs, such as JPEG, H.26x, and MPEG can not address for specific DSP applications," said Michael Sharpless, TI's Western Region Third Party business development manager.

"BroadMotion is setting the performance standard for JPEG2000 codecs. We are delivering our technology on a broad range of platforms through a common API for embedded hardware developers," said Jeff Brooks, president of BroadMotion. "By supporting TI's eXpressDSP software standard, our customers will benefit from an accelerated time to market and the comfort of knowing their products have passed compliance testing for interoperability."

Because of a DSP's ability to execute the intense processing operations inherent in JPEG2000, a variety of applications can take advantage of BroadMotion's scalable, high-performance JPEG2000 codecs. These include digital cinema devices, digital still and video cameras, set-top boxes, portable entertainment devices and mobile phones.

JPEG2000 is the next-generation International Organization for Standardization (ISO) still image and video compression standard. JPEG2000 addresses several weaknesses inherent in the existing JPEG standard by improving the image quality at low bit rates, providing efficient lossy and lossless coding in a single compression framework, and dramatically decreasing file sizes.
